The Two Surveys That Protect You: Hull vs. Mechanical (And How Not To Get Burned)
Most buyers hear “get a survey” and assume that one inspection covers everything from the hull to the engines to the electronics. In reality, you’re hiring two different experts: a hull surveyor and a mechanical surveyor, each with a very different job and a very big impact on your ownership experience. If you treat those choices as a formality, you can end up with a beautiful yacht and a very ugly repair bill.

Why “Get a Survey” Isn’t One Job
On a proper pre‑purchase inspection for a late‑model motor yacht, you’re coordinating three moving parts that often happen on the same day:
- The hull and systems survey (structural, safety, electrical, plumbing, equipment).
- The mechanical/engine survey (engines, generators, driveline, cooling, fuel, controls).
- The sea trial (how the boat actually behaves underway).
Because they usually happen as one event, buyers often assume they’re paying for one big report. They’re not. These are separate contractors, with separate scopes, separate reports, and most importantly separate liability.
Getting this right is the difference between:
- Negotiating confidently with a written, defensible list of findings, and
- Owning a yacht that looks great at the dock but quietly eats six figures in mechanical work.

What a Hull Surveyor Really Does
Think of the hull surveyor as your structural and systems specialist, the person documenting everything the boat is, and everything it needs. On survey day, a qualified hull surveyor will typically:
- Inspect the hull and underwater areas
Haul‑out, bottom inspection, through‑hulls, underwater gear, rudders, shafts, bearings, anodes, and antifouling condition.
They’ll percussion‑test and use moisture meters when appropriate to look for delamination, blistering, or other structural concerns. - Walk the decks and superstructure
Check for soft spots, leaks, cracks, and how the hull‑deck joint and structural grid are holding up. - Evaluate safety equipment and compliance
Life‑saving gear, fire systems, bilge arrangement, CO detection, and compliance with USCG, ABYC, and NFPA guidance where applicable. - Document major onboard systems
Electrical (AC/DC distribution, bonding, shore power), fuel system, potable and black water systems, HVAC, navigation electronics, deck gear, and ground tackle. - Produce a formal written report
The report will list findings by priority, safety, structural, and cosmetic, and often reference standards (ABYC, USCG, NFPA) to support the recommendations.
That written report is not a formality; it’s your leverage. It shapes your renegotiation, informs your insurance underwriter, and serves as your punch list for the first year of ownership.
What a Mechanical Surveyor Really Does
If the hull surveyor tells you what the boat is, the mechanical surveyor tells you how the boat lives, how the engines, driveline, and auxiliary machinery are actually behaving today and what they’re likely to cost you tomorrow.
A proper mechanical survey typically includes:
- Cold checks before start‑up
Visual inspection of engines and generators: mounts, hoses, clamps, exhaust components, filters, leaks, corrosion, and general installation quality before heat hides issues. - Engine and generator diagnostics
Reviewing fault codes, recorded data, and real‑time parameters like RPM, load, fuel delivery, coolant temperature, oil pressure, charge‑air pressure, and exhaust temperatures across the rev range. - Fuel, cooling, and exhaust systems
Checking raw‑water and coolant circulation, heat exchangers, coolers, fuel supply and return pressures, exhaust back‑pressure, and any signs of restriction or overheating. - Gearboxes and running gear
Observing gearbox oil pressure and temperature, alignment, and driveline behavior under load. Combined with hull surveyor notes on shafts, seals, and bearings, this is where vibration and premature wear show up. - Sea trial performance
Running the boat through the manufacturer’s recommended RPM points, idle up to WOT, while recording engine data, fuel burn, and speed.
The mechanical surveyor is looking for the engines to reach rated RPM cleanly, without abnormal vibration, noise, temperature, or alarms. - A separate mechanical report
Their findings become your roadmap for engine and generator maintenance, and your risk assessment on big‑ticket mechanical exposure during the first years of ownership.
When the mechanical surveyor is thorough, you’re not guessing at “how she runs.” You’re looking at numbers, trends, and specific recommendations from someone who lives in the engine room every day.
How Sea Trial Ties It All Together
The sea trial is where the paper meets reality.
Sequence matters:
- Cold checks while the boat is still in the slings or at the dock
Mechanical and hull surveyors look over engines, machinery spaces, and critical systems before heat and motion complicate what they can see. - Haul‑out and bottom inspection
Underwater hull, running gear, rudders, seals, and anodes get a close look while the boat is out of the water.
This is where you find bent shafts, worn bearings, compromised through‑hulls, or marine growth that will skew performance numbers. - Back in the water for the sea trial
Now you run the boat. You’re feeling acceleration, trim, steering, handling, vibration, noise, and how the stabilizers and other systems behave under load while the mechanical surveyor is watching the data. - Post‑run checks
After the engines are heat‑soaked, the mechanical surveyor re‑checks for leaks, weeps, and issues that only show up under load.
Skip or rush any part of this and you risk buying a yacht that:
- Passes a quick dockside look but hides structural and safety issues below the waterline.
- Hits target speed on the listing, but does it with marginal temperatures, poor cooling margins, or borderline exhaust figures that point to expensive near‑term work.
Why Choosing the Right Surveyors Matters
Not all surveyors are created equal, and not all of them are right for every yacht.
When you’re buying a modern, complex motor yacht, you want:
- Hull surveyors who work to recognized standards
Familiar with ABYC, USCG and NFPA guidelines, and comfortable documenting non‑conformities clearly in the report.
You’re relying on this language when you go back to the table on safety items. - Mechanical surveyors who specialize in your engines
On late‑model MANs, MTUs, CATs, or Volvo IPS, that means someone with brand‑specific training, tooling, and access to technical data so they can interpret what the ECU and sensors are telling them. - Professionals who aren’t afraid to say “no”
You want surveyors whose first loyalty is to the integrity of their report, not to pleasing the seller or keeping the deal easy.
Choosing poorly can look like:
- A hull report that glosses over critical safety items, leaving you exposed and limiting what you can legitimately ask the seller to address.
- A mechanical survey that’s basically a “visual once‑over,” with no real diagnostics or performance data, so you don’t realize you’re under‑propped, under‑cooled, or headed toward a major service until you own the boat.
Where Your Broker Should Come In
Survey day is not when a good broker just “shows up to watch.”
